Something that really confuses me about Chapter 38 is why Tom insists on Jim writing his coat of arms on the wall of the shed. Tom is seriously so ridiculous when it comes to trying to rescue Jim. It is so simple to just get out of there. Also, why in tarnation didn't they just escape when they snuck Jim out to help with the millstone? If you already have the man out of captivity then get out of there and get on with your life! Finally, why haven't Silas and Sally done anything with Jim yet? He's just been sitting in that rotten hut for days and they haven't tried to sell him or find his rightful owner at all yet.
The thing I really take away about all this is that Tom really doesn't care about helping Huck or rescuing Jim. I say this because a real friend would just make sure it got done as soon as possible and as efficiently as possible. The only reason Tom agreed to this whole charade was for the adventure and so he could boss Huck around. Tom is one of those people that has to have everything his way and if it isn't his way then it isn't the right way.
I have really lost my interest for this book. Tom basically ruins it for me. I still like the fact that Huck is still being mischievous and trying to help Jim rather than just turning him in. However, I just dislike when Huck and Tom are together. Back a few chapters when Huck and Tom we're thinking of plans to rescue Jim, Huck's idea was perfect and simple and Tom is just making everything way too difficult.
