So the transition from chapter 16 to chapter 31 really confused me. Who are these people that Huck is talking about such as the Duke? Why does the Duke seem to have so much control over Huck and Jim? He acts like him and his friend own them or something. Also, when Huck gets to the Phelps house why do they suddenly think he is Tom Sawyer? Wouldn't they know what their own nephew looks like? Finally I want to know why Tom would help Huck free Jim. If the people back then were so pro slavery then why would Tom want to help free Jim?
What I really took away from these chapters is that friendship can really make you do incredible things. For example, Huck could have sent a letter to the Widow about Jim being held captive and maybe gotten some of the reward but he didn't. He decided to go back to his old roots and do bad things and lie to save Jim. That's true friendship right there. Another example of this in these chapters is Tom helping Huck. Tom wouldn't help save a slave but since Huck asked for his help he's gonna do it. Some friendships are so strong that the friends will do anything for each other no matter what the consequences are.
I really like these chapters because even though they started out confusing I picked up on what was going on really quick. It's already exciting again, especially since Tom and Huck are back together to cause havoc. However, I don 't like the fact that Huck's conscience is still eating away at him. He just needs to live more in the moment and stop thinking about how things he does are wrong, and caring what others will think. Because at the end of the day you are the only person who's really there for you and that actually cares.
